הַשְׁגָּחָה פְּרָטִית
Nothing that happens to you is a coincidence.
Not the big things. Not the small ones either. Hashem alone does everything — and the more you live like that is true, the more of it you actually get to see.
The thing almost everyone has backwards
I had this wrong for years.
Somewhere along the way most of us picked up an idea that sounds right and isn't. It goes like this: there is hashgacha pratis, where Hashem is involved in the details — and then there is hashgacha klalis, a kind of general supervision, where Hashem runs the world in broad strokes and leaves room for things to simply happen on their own. Nature takes its course. Merit decides who gets the closer attention. Everyone else is more or less on autopilot.
I believed that. It is not true.
Hashem alone does everything. Not most things. Not the important things. Everything. That is not a comforting thought to reach for when life gets hard — it is an axiom. It is the ground the rest of it stands on.
אֵין עוֹד מִלְּבַדּוֹThere is nothing else besides Him. — Devarim 4:35
Chazal put it about as plainly as it can be put: a person does not bruise his finger down here unless they have already declared it about him up above.
A bruised finger. Not a diagnosis. Not a business collapsing. A finger.
So what is hashgacha klalis?
Here is the part that changed how I look at my own life.
Klalis and pratis are not two different amounts of Divine control. They are two different amounts of seeing.
The control is total either way. What changes is whether you experience it — whether the Hand stays hidden behind what looks like ordinary cause and effect, or whether you get to actually watch it work. Hashgacha is already specific. Already personal. Already yours, down to the detail. "Klalis" is simply what it looks like from far away, before we have merited to see the detail up close.
Which turns the whole thing into a goal instead of a category. Live so that you experience as much hashgacha pratis as possible. That is not a wish you hold quietly. It is the most active thing there is.
Which brings us to your part in it
הַכֹּל בִּידֵי שָׁמַיִם חוּץ מִיִּרְאַת שָׁמַיִםThe bridge already goes somewhere. You still have to walk it.
Where it comes out was never yours to decide. Whether you are the one who crosses — that part is entirely yours, and it is decided one plank at a time.
And now the part people use to get lazy
If Hashem does everything — why do anything?
Because everything is in the hands of Heaven except the fear of Heaven.
Before the fact, the choice is real and it is yours. What you never get to choose is the outcome. You only get to choose whether you are the one He uses to bring it.
Mordechai said this to Esther in a single sentence. If you stay silent now, relief and rescue will come to the Jews from another place — and you and your father's house will be lost. The rescue was never in question. The only thing on the table was who would get to be the one.
Esther 4:14
This is the lesson from the Ohr HaChaim HaKadosh that I keep coming back to, and it is the one I would give a person if I only had one to give: never let yourself off the hook with someone else will do it. Look at what is in front of you as though it will not happen unless you do it — because for you, it won't.
So hold both, at the same time, all the time:
- Before the fact — act as if the whole thing rests on you.
- After the fact — know that it was entirely Him.
That is not a contradiction. That is the job.
אֵין עוֹד מִלְּבַדּוֹ The light was always on the water. What changes is whether you are looking.
Nothing on this page is asking you to believe something new. It is asking you to notice something that was already happening — in your parnassa, in your health, in who walked through the door this week and when.
Below is what other people noticed. Read a few. Then start counting your own.

Why a whole site of stories
Theory changes an opinion. A story changes a person.
I could keep writing about this and it would still be an idea you agree with. What actually moves someone is hearing what happened to a person like him.
So that is what this is. Every story here was lived by a real Jew and sent in by the person it happened to. I read every one before it goes up.
Some of them are enormous. Most are small — a phone call at the exact minute, a wrong turn, a name that came up twice in one day, the thing you almost didn't do. The small ones might be the whole point. They are the ones you can start noticing in your own week, starting today.
The first stories are being read right now.
Be the first. Someone is waiting to read exactly what happened to you.

Something happened to you. Someone else needs to hear it.
You do not need to write well. You do not need to give your name. Tell it the way you would tell it at a Shabbos table — that is exactly the version that helps somebody.
Anonymous is fine. I read every single one before it goes up.
